How to choose your throw blanket?
Choosing a throw blanket involves answering three questions in order: for what use, for what material, for what interior.
First, the use. A throw blanket for the living room sofa has different requirements than one for a guest room, an office, or as a gift. For intensive daily use (sofa, children, television), opt for a robust and easy-to-maintain material like merino wool or fleece. For a bedroom or more occasional use, you can afford more precious materials like alpaca or cashmere.
Next, the material. This determines comfort, durability, and maintenance. Merino wool offers the best quality-comfort ratio for daily use. Alpaca is ideal for sensitive skin or people allergic to wool. Cashmere is the choice for absolute comfort. Faux fur or mohair provide a strong decorative effect. Cotton is suitable for mid-seasons and light use.
The size. For a single person on a sofa, a 130 x 160 cm size is sufficient. For two people or a large sofa, opt for at least 150 x 200 cm. For a decorative bed throw placed at the foot of a double bed, a 180 x 220 cm size is recommended.
Colors and patterns. A plain throw fits into any interior and never goes out of style. A checked throw (tartan, gingham, houndstooth) adds character and an authentic dimension. Geometric or contemporary patterns suit more design-oriented interiors. As a general rule, if your interior is busy with patterns, opt for a plain throw – and vice versa.
The budget. Prices vary greatly depending on the material and spinning. A fleece or cotton throw can be very affordable. A quality merino wool throw generally ranges from €80 to €200. A cashmere or alpaca throw from a reputable spinner represents an investment of €150 to €400, justified by its longevity and the rarity of the material.
What is a quality throw blanket? How can you tell?
The quality of a throw can be judged by several criteria, which can be evaluated even before touching it.
The original spinning mill. A quality throw comes from a house whose business it has been for decades, if not generations. The major European spinning mills - in Scotland, Italy, Germany - or South American ones - in Peru, Uruguay - guarantee expertise and quality control that mass industrial productions cannot reproduce. Origin is often the first reliable indicator.
The raw material. The quality of a throw begins with the quality of the fiber. Extra-fine merino wool (less than 18.5 microns) is softer than standard wool. Baby alpaca (from the first shearing) is silkier than ordinary alpaca. Grade A cashmere (long fiber, hand-combed) is incomparably softer than low-end cashmere. These distinctions are not always displayed in the window, but they are immediately felt to the touch.
The density of the weave. A dense, well-woven throw holds up better over time, does not deform with use, and retains its thermal properties longer. Conversely, a throw that is too light for its size or whose threads easily separate is a sign of inferior quality.
The finish of the edges. The finishes reveal the care taken in manufacturing. Clean edges, regular fringe, neat overstitching - these details testify to a meticulous manufacturing process from start to finish.
The weight. A quality wool throw has significant weight in the hands. This weight is reassuring - it reflects the density of the fibers and the generosity of the weave. A throw that is too light for its size is often a sign of diluted material or a loose weave.
Durability over time. A good throw does not pill excessively, does not shrink when washed, and retains its colors over time. This is one reason why investing in a throw from a spinning mill is often more economical in the long run than buying several cheap throws successively.
What's the difference between a throw and a blanket?
Throws and blankets are often confused, but they serve very different purposes and follow distinct logics.
A blanket is first and foremost a functional accessory, designed to provide warmth—typically on a bed, either replacing or complementing a duvet. It is chosen for its thermal properties, size, and price, rarely for its aesthetics.
A throw is both a utilitarian and decorative object. It is designed to be draped over a sofa, an armchair, at the foot of a bed, or carried with you—and it is an integral part of interior decor. A beautiful throw is chosen much like a cushion or a lamp: for its material, colors, patterns, and how it integrates into a living space.
The difference also lies in the quality of materials. A high-end throw is generally woven from noble fibers—merino wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere—sourced from specialized spinning mills, with craftsmanship passed down through generations. It is this artisanal and aesthetic dimension that fundamentally distinguishes a throw from a simple blanket.
At Plaid Addict, each piece is carefully selected for this dual requirement: to be beautiful in an interior and to provide genuine daily comfort.
Where do the throws sold on Plaid Addict come from?
All throws offered on Plaid Addict come from a rigorous selection from major partner spinning mills, mainly located in Europe and South America.
Among the houses Plaid Addict works with are: Johnstons of Elgin, in Scotland, one of the most renowned wool and cashmere mills in the world, whose expertise dates back to 1797. Casa Paola, in the Peruvian Andes, specializing in alpaca, an exceptional fiber harvested at high altitudes. Lanerossi, in Italy, a historic Italian wool house, recognized for the fineness of its weaves.
These spinning mills share a mastery of ancestral weaving techniques, passed down from generation to generation, and work with premium raw materials, selected at the source.
Plaid Addict's approach is that of a collection editor: finding the best pieces where they are made, building lasting relationships with these artisans, and offering in France a selection that cannot be found elsewhere in one place. This direct sourcing work is what guarantees the authenticity and consistent quality of the throws offered.
What materials are available at Plaid Addict?
Plaid Addict offers one of the widest selections on the market in terms of materials, to meet all uses and preferences.
Merino wool is the star material of the collection. Sourced from Merino sheep raised primarily in Australia and New Zealand, it is renowned for its exceptional softness (contrary to popular belief, it is not scratchy), its natural thermoregulating properties - it keeps you warm without overheating - and its durability. It is the ideal material for an everyday throw, for all seasons.
Alpaca wool is a rare and precious fiber, produced by alpacas from the Andean highlands. Lighter than sheep's wool, hypoallergenic, and naturally silky, it offers gentle, enveloping warmth. Highly appreciated for sensitive skin.
Mohair is a fiber from the Angora goat, characterized by its slightly fluffy appearance and natural sheen. Very warm for a very light weight, mohair is often blended with other fibers for throws with a unique texture.
Cashmere is the noblest fiber in the collection. Sourced from the down of cashmere goats on the Tibetan plateau, it is incomparably soft and extremely lightweight. A cashmere throw is an investment justified by its longevity and the absolute comfort it provides.
Cotton is a natural, breathable, and easy-care option - ideal for mid-season throws, for children, or for those who prefer to avoid animal fibers.
Faux fur offers a very decorative look and immediate softness. With no animal material, it is suitable for contemporary interiors and lovers of a more assertive style.
Fleece (microfiber polyester) is the most accessible material in the range - lightweight, easy to wash, very soft to the touch. Ideal for intensive daily use or for travel throws.
How to care for a wool throw?
The care of a wool throw depends on the material and weave, but a few basic rules apply to most pieces.
Hand or machine washing: most wool throws can be machine washed on a delicate or wool cycle (20-30°C maximum), using a special wool or delicate detergent, without bleach. Hand washing remains the gentlest method and is recommended for precious items such as cashmere or alpaca.
Spinning: avoid machine spin-drying, which can felt and distort the wool. If hand washing, gently press the throw without twisting to remove excess water.
Drying: always dry flat, spreading the throw on a clean, dry surface, away from direct light and heat. Never hang a wet wool throw - its own weight would distort it.
De-pilling: with use, some wool throws may form small pills (bobbles). These can be easily removed with a sweater comb or a wool stone, without damaging the material.
Cashmere and mohair: these materials are more fragile and require special attention. Hand washing in cold water is recommended, or failing that, dry cleaning. Store them folded (never on a hanger) in a protective cover to protect them from moths.
Storage: outside of cold seasons, store your clean, folded throws in a dry and airy place. Avoid airtight plastic bags which prevent the fiber from breathing.
