How to choose the right wool fabric?

Comment bien choisir un tissu en laine ?

The different types of wool

Wool comes from natural animal fibers such as sheep, goats, and camels. The name differs depending on the source; angora wool comes from goats, which also produce mohair and cashmere. A pure wool fabric is made solely from animal fibers and no other material. When combined with another fiber, it is called a blended wool fabric, whereas any fabric containing wool is simply referred to as wool fabric. There are several ranges of wool fabrics, and their uses are determined by their weight. Most importantly, wool provides warmth, which is why it is commonly seen in winter sweaters or blankets.

How to recognize good wool fabric?

Here are some tips for recognizing good wool fabric: a fabric with good wool wrinkles with difficulty. The elasticity of the fibers makes sewing easier and allows the fabric to return to its original state even after being wrinkled.

A truly thick wool fabric provides warmth during cold periods. Whereas in summer, you can wear thin wool garments that will insulate you from the heat.

Good wool fabric does not get wet easily, even in the rain. Wool is almost waterproof when it is of good quality.

What can be made with wool?

Wool can be used in several ways, depending on its weight. For wool fabrics over 500g/ml, it is used for blankets, upholstery, and peacoats.

Jackets, straight skirts, and curtains can be made with wool fabrics between 250 and 500g/ml. Fabrics between 150 and 250g/ml are called wool muslin or wool flannel.

From now on, you know that wool fabric is not necessarily associated with the warmth it provides.

A small tip for maintaining the elasticity of wool: dampen it with a spray bottle and air dry. For ironing, always use a pressing cloth.
